Genres

The full game ships 50 genres: 49 in seven groups, plus MASHUP at the top of the menu next to SURPRISE ME. A genre is not a playlist; it is a recipe the generator composes inside, so every play is a new song that still sounds like its genre.

What a genre recipe controls

Each genre defines its authentic BPM range (HOUSE sits at 118 to 128, DOOM crawls at 60 to 84, SPEEDCORE sprints past 230), the scales and key colors it favors, swing (LOFI drags behind the beat, most electronic styles play straight), drum kits and kick, snare and hat vocabularies, bass styles, chord progression banks (several mined from analysis of real music), pad character, percussion families and which instruments your note lanes play. Several genres are grounded in analysis of real MIDI performances, which is where the swing and fill behavior comes from.

Recipes are defaults, not laws: songs sometimes borrow a single element from a neighboring genre (a house track with dembow percussion, trap with a funk bass lick), which keeps a long session surprising. A few strict-identity genres like SALSA, CLASSICAL and LIMINAL never borrow.

SURPRISE ME

Starts a song with no forced genre: the generator picks at random from your visible genres, and any genre you have hidden in MANAGE GENRES is skipped. The resolved genre rides the share code, so replaying it reproduces the exact same song.

MASHUP

MASHUP blends genres inside one song: each section borrows a different genre's groove and sound over one shared key, melody and tempo, so it stays musically coherent while flipping styles. Tapping it opens a picker: choose which genres feed the blend (two or more; choosing none means everything). Each generated mashup draws two or three sources from your pool and rotates their kits, basses, chords and percussion across sections. Your selection is remembered and rides the share code.
